Possible to use old iMac + Mac Mini?

My old iMac (8+yrs) is really showing its age. I don't have the funds to buy a new one, nor do I want payments. Won't for a long time.

I was wondering if there was a way to use the old iMac as just a monitor + current keyboard + mouse and get a new Mini? It would be the least expensive way for me to upgrade.
