Eprson Scan Preview Very Slow

Image scanning has slowed dramatically. It's actually ONLY the Image Preview Scan. The Preview can take minutes to complete while the actual scan itself is as fast as you would expect - just a few seconds. The Preview or Overview Scan acts like it is taking a very high-resolution image instead of a quick-and-dirty lo-res appropriate for an overview. This must be a system-level bug because it is a problem with Image Capture, the Epson scan software associated with the printer, and even a third-party app called VueScan.
