I have DuckDuckGo set as my default search engine in Safari (I also use STARTpage occasionally) in trying to avoid Google’s snooping. My question is, if I just open Safari and type the URL directly into the Safari box, do they use Google, Duck, or what to take me there?

Neither Google nor Yahoo will have an inkling. You can also use Private browsing.

NOTE: I’m not doing anything nefarious, just trying to avoid as much Google-Big Brother-tracking as possible. I understand that this sort of tracking sics advertisers and solicitors on me.

Not quite. Safari is a browser. Chrome is a browser. Firefox is a browser. Opera is a browser. DuckDuckGo is a search engine. Google is a search engine. Bing is a search engine.
Browsers don't track where you go. Search engines (except for DuckDuckGo) DO track where you go.
However, (almost) all browsers tell any websites that you visit a lot of information about you, such as your IP address, the type of browser, what extensions you use, etc. And knowing your IP address the site knows roughly where you are located. If you don't what this information tracked you need to use the TOR network and TOR browser: https://www.torproject.org/about/overview

If you type a URL directly in to the box, no search engine is used at all.
Safari is a browser, just like Google, Firefox, DuckDuckGo, etc. Safari takes you there.
