Seems like the charging port is loosen up as I plug the cable. The phone would be charge (or not) depends on the cable connected or not.
I don't have Applecare so I want to know how much would it be to have it fix? Thanks.

Well, cleaning is not really helpful in this case. I still need to jiggle the cable to get a connection (between the cable and the phone.)
Today the issue become worse. When I manage to get a connection, I turned off the phone for the night. Yet this morning I found my phone is not able to turn on. Showing an empty battery sign. If I unplug and replug, the phone would start, but then it will turn off by itself. The battery was around 40% full when I charge it.

Thanks for the advice. Went to the nearby Apple store and have the staff checked the phone. He cleaned the port for me and now the phone works like a champ 🙂 Never know there are that much of dust inside the tiny port! And now I know the right way to clean it.

It's more likely that there is lint or grit in the lightning port that is preventing the cable from seating fully. Try cleaning it out.
