iPhone 6 plays music whenever headphones are plugged in. How do you make it stop?

I have an iPhone 6. Since the last update, now it starts playing music at full volume every time I plug in the headphones. I use the headphones for phone calls all the time, so this is incredibly annoying.

How on earth do you make it stop doing this????? I'm ready to throw this **** phone in the dumpster!!!
