when i delete an email from my iphone se, why isn't the email deleted from my macbook as well?

Previously, when I deleted an email from my macbook air, the same email would be deleted from my iphone se and vice versa (if I deleted email on my iphone it would be deleted on my mac) but now that no onger happens. I have to manage each device separately. How do I get them reconnected?

iPhone SE, iOS 11.2.6, macbook air

make sure you are using imap on both, make sure you are signed into iCloud on both
