Having trouble with my iMac and sierra. It shuts down and have done everything to reboot and keep running. Ran a hardware test and it came back with no problem, which seems to indicate a software issue? Hoe reliable is the Apple hardware test?

Not 100% reliable.

Can you get the computer to boot? If you can and it will run for about five minutes, try running this program in your normal user account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. You can run the report for free at least once, but if you run it several times, at some point it will ask you to pay a license fee.

If all else fails, do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives if possible. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart). Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.
