imessage doesn't work.

iMessage doesn't work. when i click sign in it says"could not sign in to imessage An error occurred during activation. Try again." (i tried on 2 devices ipad air and macbook air) is it a apple id problem?

Error occurred during iMessage activation on iPad I’m trying to activate iMessage on my iPad. When I go to settings, then messages, my Apple ID shows but I cannot press sign in because it is not highlighted. When I use return on the keyboard to submit the request I get the message “An error occurred during iMessage activation”. I’m connected to WIFI and also verified my Apple ID. What am I doing wrong?
