How to stop fullscreen application from minimizing itself

So, my Mac Pro has two monitors attached to it. However, when I have an application open fullscreen on monitor 1, for instance, opening an app on monitor 2 minimizes the fullscreen one, then opens on monitor 2. How do I stop it from minimizing the fullscreen application on monitor 1?
