every time I try to type my username and password into a site another tab pops up telling me I need to get more security or I need to update my flash player. Is that what I need to do?
Pop up tells me I have to update flash player. Can I trust that?

Should not trust it. This is a scam popup.
1. Click in the menu bar and choose “Force Quit”.
In the window that opens up, select “Safari” and click “Force Quit.
2. Relaunch Safari holding the shift key down.
