my iMac Pro issues

My new iMac Pro arrived roughly a month ago. After some weeks of being happy with its performance here're some issues I discovered:

1. crypro_val errors: There's a separate hread on this one: warning: crypto_val: object (oid 0x4): invalid state.key_revision (0) : My view is that Apple used a corrupted image when mastering the iMac Pros.
2. Startup keys not working: Pressing the option (alt) button at startup didn't started the startup manager. But when I've tried to reset the NVRAM by pressing option (alt) + cmd + P + R I didn't reset the NVRAM but started the startup manager and was able to select an USB stick to boot from.
3. No boot from USB stick: When trying to do so, I received an error message telling me a software update of the USB stick is needed. After installing the software the iMac Pro reboots but is showing the same message. So I'm only able to boot "normally" or from the recovery partion, but not from an USB device.
4. Sometimes the iMac Pro is loosing the connection to my trackpad even if it's connected via cable. I need to switch off and on the trackpad.
5. Sometimes my iMac Pro freezed and powered off by itself. After a lot of investigation I deleted all widgets from the dashboard. Since I did, this issue never happened again.t

It seems for quality control at Apple (as with other hard and software) there's a lot of room for improvement...

The **** goes on!
1. High Sierra Combo Update:
The current version of High Sierra on my iMac Pro is 10.13.3. (17D2102). I've downloaded the update from here Download macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 Update for iMac Pro but wasn't able to install. The error message means, the target drive must be formatted with APFS. Have a look to the information of that drive: It is APFS formatted!!!
2. Creating an USB boot stick: I've tried to download High Sierra from the App Store. But App Store tells me that the version already installed is newer than the one in App Store, so no download possible!

In a nutshell: No update, no boot stick! Great job, Apple!

your #3 is not going to work because there currently is no GM dmg file for the iMac pro. So you are not going to create a bootable installer on any drive let alone a usb thumb drive.

Here's the Apple doc to assist user to create a bootable media for installation. Thereference for high Sierra is only for MACS not iMac pros. Need to be patient.

Place the App Store GM installer in the Applications folder.

Then use the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal

  1. After downloading the installer, mount the USB flash drive or other volume that you're using for the bootable installer. Make sure that it has at least 12GB of available storage.
  2. Open Terminal, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  3. Type one of the following commands in Terminal. These all assume that the installer is in your Applications folder, and the name of the volume that you're using for the bootable installer is MyVolume. If your volume is named differently, replace MyVolume with the name of your volume

High Sierra

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Sierra

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app

El Capitan

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app

Yosemite

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app

Mavericks

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app

@seventy one:

1.) I won't return the device, because on all the problems I have, I'm not alone! So it seems that my iMac Pro is faulty, but there're several general issues with this new device. Fortunately I don't discovered all the problems, others are reporting (as looping during normal boot etc.) I hope that Apple will come up with some piece of software (macOS or firmware) to overcome all the problems. Otherwise they'll receive a lot of delivered iMac Pros in their stores...
2.) Thanks for the hint with the different methode to reset the SMC. But is such information also available for other options (e.g. that startup manager is reached as I described above)?

Feb 27, 2018 12:59 AM in response to th10gt

FWIW, I have none of your issues with my iMac Pro. So either yours is defective or you are having software issues. As far as not booting from the USB drive message, a Mac won't boot from a version of macOS earlier than it was shipped with and, in the case of iMac Pros, the USB stick would have to have an iMc Pro version of High Sierra.

@CountryGirl56: You've wrote "... in the case of iMac Pros, the USB stick would have to have an iMac Pro version of High Sierra." Does that mean when downloading High Sierra from the App Store with an iMac Pro that's a different version as I would download with my MacBookAir? That would be a pitty because up to now I thought, if I would have a bootable USB stick with macOS on it, it would be fine for all Macs...

About this, I tried to download High Sierra from the App Store and had the same message. If I had to speculate it could be because we've installed the supplemental update which isn't included with the 10.13.3 installer in the App Store, So it looks like you have to wait for 10.13.4.

Mar 1, 2018 10:33 AM in response to th10gt

High Sierra 10.13.3 version for MACS is 17D47 without the supplemental updater. High Sierra 10.13.3 for iMac Pro is version 17D2027 without the supplement; updaters. So yes even the previous versions of high Sierra have been different for the iMac pro. Its the way its always been.

Later on as its always been they merge to the same version and I think 10.13.4 will be the one.

@smokerz: Thanks for your reply. But what you wrote on #2, I don't understand. Can't fetch the reason why the startup keys on a pro are different...

@countrygirl: Ok, hope it will work now. Here's the report:

Countrygirl, are you doing anything else than answering to my posts? Thank you so much! But uninstalling CMM? It's running on all my other Macs and I never had a problem. And sometimes I really need it. (Some days ago I had > 200.000 files in my bin. Finder wasn't able to finally empty the bin, but CMM did it. And I'm using it sometimes to uninstall something, because CMM is also cleaning the library etc.) I'll think about it.

Btw, where are you located? I guess West coast of the US. So it's evening with you while here (Germany) it's 5:30 am in the morning...
