airpods make a clicking noise with iPhoneX

Any idea how to stop the clicking noises that come from wireless headsets (airpods but happens with others as well) when using iPhones (happens with iPhone 7 and X)? It is really loud and annoying. Didn't always do it. Just started recently. I've had the airpods since December and they were awesome...I loved them. Now the clicking is so loud, I almost can't use them.
