Brief beachballing after login to one account

I have an 2010 iMac with 8GB of ram. Immediately after I log in to one of my accounts, I cannot click anywhere on the screen without a beachball. However, after several minutes the beachball affect goes away, and I am able to work normally. On a second account that I occasionally use there is no problem logging in and immediately able to work. So there is something wonky about the first account. Any suggestions about troubleshooting the temporary beachball effect would be greatly appreciated.
