tried to update ios on iphone 4, now it won't stop searching for update

Please help, I tried to update ios on iphone 4. Now been informed that I can't update it but now phone keeps searching for software update for last 10 days. How do I stop it?? Contacted apple, no luck!!! Took sim out of phone, no luck. Turned phone off overnight, no luck!!! It's still searching now!!!
