How do I set High Sierra's QuickTime Player not to open at highest volume setting every time?

I have an iMac running High Sierra and QuickTime Player v10.4. Every time QTP opens, it does so at the full volume setting. How do I change this to open at last used setting, or even mute, instead of full volume?
