Mysql installation problems. error 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

My platform is El Capitan 10.11.6. I installed mysql and I can't start it. i get this error 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) Can someone help me with this? Thanks
