I'm not that familiar with iMac products. I just had the iMac (20 inch, mid2007) with OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 placed in my office. I have A LOT of PC files from Microsoft Office software. I wanted to install the iWorks essentials apps but cannot because it say's my OS isn't new enough. I have 2 Ghz core 2 Duo 4 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM. Am I able to upgrade further or get any apps or programs that will help me with MS Office compatibility?
For Mountain Lion, verify that you downloaded LibreOffice v5.4.5.
You double-click the application installer, and then drag the application image within the installer onto the link to the applications folder, also in that installer panel. Then eject the installer from your Desktop.
Next, since this application did not come from the Mac App Store, you have to verify it with Apple's Gatekeeper. In the Applications folder, right-click on the LibreOffice icon, and choose Open from the pop-up dialog. You will see a verification progress bar, and you may have to select Open again to actually open the application. This is a one-time verification ritual, and then you can double-click on the LibreOffice icon to launch it normally.
Also, LibreOffice may pop a dialog about needing Java. Disregard. In the LibreOffice Preferences : Advanced panel, ensure that the use a Java Runtime environment is unchecked. This will gag future dialogs on this subject. You won't need Java unless you are doing database activity in LibreOffice.
What exactly happens when you try to open it. Maybe you're up against Gatekeepr as VikingOSX mentions. That's easy to circumvent.
I run LO5 under Mavericks. I decided I wasn't willing to be a guinea pig for 6 yet.
The OS can't be upgraded further. If desired, install a product such as LibreOffice.

LibreOffice 6 now requires Mavericks or later. LO v5.4.5 requires Mtn Lion or later.
So, since I've got El Cap I'm good? I downloaded the free Libre and it won't open.
I double click on the file LibreOffice_6.0.1_MacOS....::64.dmg and it say's "The following disk image could not be opened. Image not recognized"
