What cuts off? Do you mean turns off? Please read Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question.
A Troubleshooting Protocol to Identify Problems or Fix macOS El Capitan or Later
You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.
Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.
- Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
- When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
- Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
- Set the Format type to APFS (for SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
- Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
- Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
- Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

That is a warning that the drive is failing. This may only be a formatting problem or actual hardware failure. Follow the instruction to back up your files quickly. Once you have done that then I would proceed to an Erase and Install:
Install El Capitan or Later from Scratch
If possible backup your files.
This will install the version of OS X you had installed.
If this fails then you will need to replace the drive.
Thank you so much for your response. I followed steps 1-5 without any changes.
Then I did step 6, and held down the COMMAND and R keys as instructed. The computer finally booted. This is the final screen that I’m left with:
Red Octogon sign with an Exclamation Mark inside ‼
The message: Running First Aid___________
First Aid process has failed. If possible back up the data in this volume. Click Done to continue.
I wasn’t able to perform the Erase. The disk failed. I will need to replace the hard drive. At least I have a backup on an external drive and I had used Time Machine regularly. Thanks so much for your help.
