can't share photos between iPhone and MacBook

iPhotos are on iPhone (all updates are current). iPhoto sharing is enabled. A shared album is created. Photos are in the shared album.

The MacBook using High Sierra has iPhotos sharing enabled. The macbook owner is in my contacts list on the iPhone. But the MacBook owner has an android phone w/o iCloud.

When I add the MacBook owners contact info to the list of users authorized to access the shared album I can't add them because iCloud has an issue with the phone number not being iCloud enabled.

What's the phone number got to do with it? I'm trying to send photos to the MacBook, not the phone.

I'm missing something obvious?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)
