Question: How to upload png and pdf files to iCloud?

I have png images on my Mac that I'd like to have on my iPhone. I also have pdfs.

My iCloud is set up so that any photos I take on my iPhone go into iCloud and then Photos on my Mac.

I do NOT want to synchronize Photos to upload to iCloud because I also take photos with a separate camera. I don't want these to go to iCloud because of large file size.

I'm very frustrated by the lack of interoperability between Mac, iPhone, Photos, and iCloud. It really seems I should be able to drag and drop or at least upload any kind of image file from my Mac to iCloud without having to go through Photos.

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), null

If you're Mac and iPhone are using the same Apple ID then you can use messages directly on you're Mac (which can send through the iPhone). This well work no issue for PNG images. I'm not sure if iMessage works with PDFs.

See Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch - Apple Support for setting up the Mac to use the iPhone cell phone number.

I just signed in to the Messages app on my Mac. It doesn't have access to my Contacts on my iPhone?

If I send a text via Messages on my Mac, does it appear in the message thread on my phone? Will a response to the text go back to my Mac or my phone?

If you're Mac and iPhone are properly linked then you should see the thread appear on the iPhone once sent through the Mac.

As for access to the contacts:

If using iCloud go to 'System Preferences > iCloud > Contacts' (mark sure it checked).

If using a third party for contacts go to 'System Preferences > Internet Accounts', add the third party account (should be '+' icon somewhere in left/lower left), once added should be able to turn on 'Contacts'.
