It takes so long because if people don't know the answer they won't post, then a topic posted almost a month ago scrolls to the 30 page down and nobody looks for it anymore. In this case it is better to start your own topic.

On a mobile device go to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Apple ID and check your payment information is current. Even if you only want something that is free this will be required if you have any payment form currently on record, and possibly before you can remove payment information (see the last two links) if desired.

- Are you (still) using a valid payment method? --> Payment methods that you can use in the iTunes Store, App Store, and iBooks Store - https://support.apple.com/HT202631 (Discussions on this forum mention some countries do not accept debit cards, and even if they do some items cannot be purchased with debit cards.)

- If your payment method is declined, or you have a billing issue with a previous purchase in the iTunes Store - https://support.apple.com/HT203005 - various reasons why payment method is declined including pending purchases.

- If this abruptly started happening try removing and re-entering your payment information - Change or remove your Apple ID payment information - https://support.apple.com/HT201266

- Do the name, address (all spelling, letter case and punctuation), and card numbers exactly match those you have entered? You didn't mis-type anything?

- You entered the 3 digit security code for the card? Correctly?

- The country for the bank and your address are the same as the iTunes Store country you are using?

- See the end of the document linked above for special measures that may be necessary for some cards, plus about contacting your financial institution to make sure your records match.

If you still have a problem contact Apple:

To remove payment:

Removing a credit card from an account - Change or remove your Apple ID payment information - https://support.apple.com/HT201266 - More information at: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3251676?answerId=15891166022#15891166022

If you can‘t choose None when you edit your Apple ID payment information - https://support.apple.com/HT203905 - also make sure you don't have any active subscriptions, are set as the Family Organizer for a Family Sharing plan, or owe any money for past purchases.

My iPad 2 is doing the same thing. Appears to be happening with App's that can not be updated due to the ipad2's inability to upgrade to the newer OS, and the (certain specific) App's which won't accept an older OS (such as gaming App's and several others)

Netflix is one that continues to function, but who knows for how long.

Basically; certain applications won't update as your operating system isn't updated, and the older Apple products don't allow the operating system to update.

This is a Catch 22.

It is unfortunately a marketing scheme to get you to buy new equipment and it *****.

I am buying myself an older Android tablet as my research has shown they continue to update much longer than Apple's products.

Hope this helps.

Hello

I have the same problem. Same phrase appears when I try update. I've tried everything.

Apparently it is because the iPad/phone being used is not new enough to update it's OS, which in turn causes certain App's to not be able to update.

Basically if you are seeing this message, your tablet/phone no longer supports an operating system (OS), that the application your trying to use can run on.

You can try a factory reset, but it didn't work for me.

The inability of the tablet/phone to update is a marketing scheme to get you to buy new merchandise.

Unfortunately it's a catch 22.

I'm purchasing an old Android tablet to transfer my games/apps to because Androids don't have the same problems.

An Android will slow down but it won't prevent you from downloading your apps because it always accepts updates. No matter it's age.

Hope this helped.

Jesse
