Adjusting finder icon

For my Finder folders I manually change the Finder icon to images of my chosing.

Recently, the Finder icon automatically reshapes the icon in a square, which makes the image out of proportion since the original image is rectangular.

Does anyone why this happens and how do I ensure the Finder icon will be in the shape as I copy the image?

Finder icon view only displays a single column In my finder, for certain folders, it will only display a single column of icons, regardless of icon size or grid spacing. Even if I extend the finder window all the way across the screen, there's a single column of icons. Is there any way to get this to present in a grid? Some folders will show a grid of icons, but some folders don't.

Larger icons in Finder When viewing documents in the 'icon' view in Finder, is there a way to make the icons appear larger? it can be quite hard to see the thumbnails of images, especially on a 5k screen. I realise there is 'gallery' view but this makes it hard to select multiple images at once, or view more than one.

icons spread out when moving from finder to desktop So, for my job I combine a lot of files into one singular file. The easiest way for me to do this is to click and drag the files from finder and then I move them to the desktop. When I click and drag the icons to the desktop they spread out into no concernable pattern and its just random and weird. However, if I drag the files back to finder and then back to the desktop they stay in a nice, neat orderly horizontal line. How can I change it so it NEVER spreads them out randomly and they always just show as an orderly line? Not sure who would even want that feature. 🥴

This is an ongoing problem with High Sierra, and it is not known whether it will ever be addressed.
