GPS Format on Apple Watch

I have been comparing smartwatches.

For me the heart rate monitor and GPS functions are key.

However in the UK we use a specific format to convert standard Lat and Long format into something called "British National Grid". This format is immediately compatible with our UK OS Maps (paper) and would be a good aid to navigation.

What GPS formats does Apple Watch support?

Thanks

Thanks for the update.

I emailed the UK Ordnance Survey direct and they confirm that their very simple OS Locate app is also available for the Apple Watch.

This simply shows the BNG format if you are in Great Britain and then if outside GB your standard Latitude and Longitude.

This app is widely recommended for all hikers/walkers in the UK as its a great backup if your traditional map and compass technique is a bit flaky. By simply displaying the same coordinate system as your paper map its easy to find out where you are and to pass that on to Emergency Services if required.

Both the Garmin and Suunto GPS Watches will display such coordinates in their local format.

Perhaps Apple might follow suit..

Many thanks

Peter

Hi Peter

The built-in GPS feature on Apple Watch Series 3 does not include a function for checking your GPS co-ordinates.

The built-in feature instead enables, for example, a route map to be recorded for certain outdoor workouts when recording them via the built-in Workout app.

If you would like to submit a feature request to Apple, then you can do so here:

Feedback - Apple Watch - Apple

However, you may find that a third-party app meets your needs in respect of tracking your location during specific fitness activities.

For example:

ViewRanger on the App Store

  • Currently supports GPS-based navigation including when using your Apple Watch away from your iPhone, subject to having first downloaded the relevant map to your watch:
  • "Follow routes and explore offline on Apple Watch Series 2 & 3 (or on earlier models when connected to iPhone)."

To browse and search for this and/or other third-party apps with the results pre-filtered to include only those iPhone apps that also include an app for Apple Watch, use the Watch app on your iPhone. Apps can be searched by keyword or app name via the Search tab. Follow the instructions here to add and use compatible apps on your Apple Watch:
