Problems importing photos from iPhone 7 to Photos on MacBook Air

I have plugged in my iPhone to my Mac and I know that the device is recognised as it shows up in iTunes and has synced and backed up on there. However when I go onto the photos app on my Mac, the option/screen to import photos from my phone to my mac does not show up and there is no sidebar at all with an option to view my devices. This has not happened before and normally I have no trouble transferring photos from my phone to my mac.

MacBook Air, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

Probably iCloud Photo Library is enabled on your Phone - if it is you can not manually import form it, you either use ICPL to sync photos to other devices or you do not use it and manually import, you can not do both
