Lost data possibly due to virus

While on internet using Firefox and DuckDuckGo with my Mac Air with High Sierra 10.13.3 I got hacked with sudden big blue screening warning my firewall was compromised, do not shut down computer. I called number provided (a mistake). Short conversation and I hung up- no info given. Since then I have no desktop icons and lost all my files under "documents". How can I restore them and check for malware?

Just for future reference, any time you see anything on a web page or as a popup saying your computer is infected and/or other such nonsense, it is a lie. Period. There is no method in the world that can determine what is on a remote computer through a web browser. Not unless you allow it, such as clicking a link to attach a résumé to a job application.
