Can I sync my old iPod to my existing iTunes library?

My iPod Touch has over a thousand songs that I copied from CDs. I have not sync'd it in over ten years, since I started buying songs directly from apple. If I sync it now, I’m afraid all my CDs might get erased. Can anyone offer some thoughts?
