Problem with the Help menu MacOS 10.13.3

I'm on a 2010 iMac running MacOS 10.13.3. When I use the help menu in any application:

I select the help menu

type in my query

get a list of possible options

But when I select one of the options, the resulting text is a one character column of text, which is not usable.

Is there a fix for this?

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

Try toggling the, "Show scroll bars," settings in System Preferences, General.
