Why is the installer quitting? How do I get rid of Malware on an iMac?

I believe I have some malware on my computer. I was trying to download something from a site I have always downloaded stuff from in the past so I thought it was safe but when it told me my flash player was outdated and I needed to upgrade it, that should have been the red flag right there.

I was told about a free application called Malwarebytes that is supposed to be really good at locating and getting rid of malware. I downloaded it but here is the next issue and I don't know if they Malware is causing this to happen or not but when I opened the .dmg package, the installer quits unexpectedly every time. I cannot even install it. Is there any other way I can try to install the software so I can run a scan?

If anyone has any other solutions, please list some suggestions.

My system drive is partitioned - 10.8.5 on one side and I have 10.12.6 on the other side. The Sierra side of the drive seems to be okay, its the 10.8.5 side that I believe has the malware.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Very good point! I am guessing because the OSX on my iMac is so old that could be the issue. I did reach out to Malwarebytes to see if they happened to have anything that is compatible with OSX 10.8 or later. I am waiting to hear back from them. I took a peak in the Apps store as well and I saw one thing there that could work with 10.8 or later.

Hello DVX100Shooter,

EtreCheck runs fine on Mountain Lion. Download EtreCheck from https://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID. When you are done, EtreCheck can be thrown in the trash.

If adware is installed, EtreCheck will help you remove it, although you may have to supply a password. If you aren’t comfortable with that, just post the EtreCheck report here and other helpers can tell you exactly what files need to be deleted and how to do so.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free to download and use at first, it will eventually ask you to buy a license. There are also other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.
