Kernel Panics

Over the past month I have been received five kernel panics. I am looking for advice on troubleshooting.

In November I purchased a new 27 inch iMac, currently running macOS 10.13.3 (iMac18,3, Intel Core i5, 3.4 GHz, 8 GB w/ 512 GB SSD). I migrated everything from my old iMac, updated all software, and got everything up and running the first week in December. In addition, I attached two external hard drives in a Firewire daisy chain (one for a Time Machine disk and one for a bootable clone) using two Apple adapters in series (Thunderbolt 3-to-TB2 and TB2-to-Firewire). This is the same setup that I used on my old iMac, minus the adapters. In the first week in February, I started experiencing kernel panics. They only happened when the iMac was asleep, and the machine always restarted on its own.

Although I am a long-time iMac user, I don't know much about operating systems or operating files. I did some reading and took the following actions:

1. Double-checked to ensure that all software was up to date.

2. Ran First Aid on both external drives using Disk Utility and Drive Genius 5. Everything was sat.

3. Noticed that KPs started occurring after an update of MS OneDrive, so I uninstalled and then reinstalled OneDrive. (One KP happened after doing this.)

4. Disconnected the last HDD in the Firewire daisy chain. (Plan to only connect it once a week when I do my clone.)

Is there anything else I should do? This is not a critical problem as it only happens when the machine is asleep, the computer restarts on its own, and I don't lose any data. Nonetheless, it is annoying. Also, is there an article that I can read to learn how to decipher diagnostic/error reports?

Post the kernel panic log here so we can evaluate it. You should find them in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

The two almost exclusive causes of kernel panics are hardware faults and third-party kernel extensions. If the panic log has anything non-apple listed under "loaded kexts," uninstall it following the developer's instructions. Test to see if the panics subside.

If there are no third-party kexts, then hardware is the likely cause, with RAM being number one. Hardware faults can be caused by external hardware as well as internal.

Very rarely, there can be something in NVRAM. It's quick and easy to reset, though it likely won't help:

Barney-15E, thanks for the reply. The panic log for the most recent event is posted below. If I'm looking at the right file, I didn't see anything that says "loaded kexts." Is this the correct file? If not, please give me a little more guidance. I didn't bother to reset the NVRAM since I haven't seen any of the symptoms mentioned in the article that you referenced.

I wanted to update this discussion to document one other action I took before going to the Genius Bar. Some of the articles I read during troubleshooting stated that, in addition to software and internal and external hardware problems, bad/corrupt files in system caches are sometimes a problem. As a last measure before packing up my iMac and trucking it 25 miles to the Apple Store, I used OnyX to clear all the system caches. Since then, I have had no additional kernel panics. Hopefully, this has solved my problem.

Barney-15E, thanks again for your help. Your "Machine Check" response made me start thinking about system caches, since this is a brand new iMac that worked great in its first two months of life.
