microphone is not working

I have a Macbook Pro Retina mid 2014 (High Sierra 10.13.3). I use an external microphone SmartLAV+ 3,5 mm TRRS.

Two years ago it worked. But today it doesnot work anymore. I looked at preference, sound, input. But there is only the internal microphone. I don't see my external microphone, so I can not choose. It is also not recording with the external microphone.

Is the input (input headphone) not anymore also an input for a micophone? Only when you use a combination of headphone & microphone?

What is an solution? Do I have to buy an USB microphone blue Snowball? Is that a better choice? Why is it not working anymore?

Thanks for the help!

AFAIK, the headphone jack on a MacBook Pro Retina mod 2014 has never supported a microphone or headphones with a built-in microphone.

USB microphones and headsets with built-in microphones should work.
