Deleted Bootcamp partition with Assistant, now that disk space gone

Normally used Bootcamp Assistant to remove Windows by 'restore disk to single partition'. It ended with some error message, but it wasn't "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition".

That happened last time, and I used the instructions in this post to do some terminal erasing and merging, and successfully removed bootcamp and then installed it again.

This time the Assistant succeeded in removing it, because now when you open the Assistant it offers to install Windows again.

But the previous partition space, which was 60GB, is now missing in action:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.3 GB disk0

1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1

2: Apple_APFS Container disk1 440.0 GB disk0s2

/dev/disk1 (synthesized):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: APFS Container Scheme - +440.0 GB disk1

Physical Store disk0s2

1: APFS Volume HD 396.8 GB disk1s1

2: APFS Volume Preboot 19.5 MB disk1s2

3: APFS Volume Recovery 506.6 MB disk1s3

4: APFS Volume VM 1.1 GB disk1s4

Thank you very very.

I took a photo, hope that's okay.

I didn't do the repair, wanted to make sure you felt I can do that without deleting something I wouldn't want to.

If it's okay, let me know and I'll go ahead with the repairDisk.

Here's list now:

sorry for the trouble

We can try the same steps again and see if BCA can merge it back. Since you are booted in macOS, can you run

diskutil repairDisk disk0

and post the output? This will be a 'live' repair, which can make a difference. After the repair, we can run the same commands, and boot into Safe Mode (Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support) to see if that makes any difference.

Notice the Free Space after GPT2. Boot into Internet Recovery using Command+Opt+R when booting up, click on Utilities -> Terminal, and run

diskutil unmountDisk disk0

gpt add -i 3 -b 859784616 -s 117320411 -t windows /dev/disk0

gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

diskutil repairDisk disk0

Select and Copy (Command+C) the output of the Terminal session, quit Terminal, start Safari (Get Help Online), and Paste (Command+V) as a reply to this discussion so we can check for errors. Stay in Internet Recovery, in case there are any errors to be corrected.

i do have a tm backup from a few days back, though i've already made changes to many files, so that's no good.

i could do another one.

i've never done a restore from backup, tho, so i'm suspicious.

this bootcamp fiasco and countless others certainly don't fill me with confidence in tim's inventions.

i'd rather lose 60gb of space than 6mb of critical files.

you managed to bring the 60gb partition back to life. would there by any chance be a way of merging it with the main one through terminal, without involving BCA?

Hola.

Repair went fine, result same as above, line for line.

Also same result, line for line, for the diskutil list and afps, the only difference being in space available as i've downloaded a few things. The 60g still missing.

result for gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0 also identical to above.

i was thinking, even if i did a tm backup now and restored from it, it would most likely just duplicate this issue, no?

otherwise, if restoring from backup is not a 10000% copy of what i had before, i wouldn't come near it.

so i wonder if we did this again:

diskutil unmountDisk disk0

gpt add -i 3 -b 859784616 -s 117320411 -t windows /dev/disk0

gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

which created this:

3:

Microsoft Basic Data 60.1 GBdisk0s3

if there might be a way to merge the 60gb into the 500gb drive with your terminal wizardry, without using BCA. Or deleting it somehow, if that gave the 60 back to the 500. Or at least make it an empty usable drive/partition into/out of which I could move stuff in finder.

BCA is unsurprisingly still offering to install Windows.

Many cheers.
