iMessage display - iPhone X

In my Messages display there is a small "new moon" symbol beside the name of one contact. What does this mean?

Hey there, Alison!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I understand one of your contacts has a moon icon to the left in your Messages app, and you're unsure what that means. Knowing the features and functions of your phone is important, and I'd be happy to let you know what's going on!

When the moon icon is present next to a thread in Messages in iOS 11, it means that alerts for that thread are hidden. In other words, you don't get notified when a new messages is received in that thread, whether it's one person or a group message. This can be convenient if you are in a group message that is particularly active, but we don't want to miss any important messages, either. So, if this was enabled inadvertently, you can turn it off:
  1. Open the thread with hidden alerts.
  2. Tap the User uploaded file in the upper right of the thread (next to the contact name).
  3. Turn the "Hide Alerts" toggle off.
Once you've turned Hide Alerts off for that thread, I would encourage you to take a look at: Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support , which gives you more information on not only Hide Alerts, but other features and capabilities of Messages.

Cheers!
