iMac running very slow

Could the recent additional security measures to counter attack the rise of hacks, introduced by Apple (and others) be the principal cause of the 'slow down.'

I have tried the usual remedies.

Clearly there is something more involved and I wonder if this issue is more widespread ?

I am amazed that there is not more written and published about this topic.
