Question: High Sierra USB drive problems

Macbook Pro, mid '15, 15"

High Sierra 10.13.3

Have experienced USB drive problems, with unusual startup when the drive is inserted. Sometimes, the drive won't initialise correctly, (displaying drive on desktop & in finder). Disk Utility shows the drive, but the volume is unmounted/empty. Tried to press mount, eject, reinsert etc. None of this helped. After searching around I noticed others with problems with High Sierra in particular. Tried some restarts and this seemed to fix the problem. However it reoccurred after unplug & replugging the drive. The ExFAT file system seems to be more reliable than APFS encrypted, probably because it's much simpler without password encryption. As an aside; when I used to use Windows, it's USB function was much more reliable!

If anybody has any suggestions, it would be appreciated. Also, do you have the same problem?

Apple's next macOS version will be focusing on reliability & stability rather than new features. Lets hope they fix this USB issue.
