iPhone X Overheating & Battery Draining

Has anyone experienced the iPhone X overheating & the battery draining?

Specs: iPhone X 64 GB Version: 11.2.6

I believe the issue started 2 days ago. I woke up yesterday morning and the phone was dead (I didn't have it charging overnight, but I have never had it die overnight as of yet.) I plugged it in while I got ready, and it turned on and began charging. I charged it in my car, and then I charged it at work up until about 60% then I needed to use it.

I had it in my hands for a few minutes, and I could feel the case getting hot. I took the case off, and the phone was so hot I couldn't even hold it in my hand, but it wasn't shutting off, so I manually shut the phone off. I left it off for about 15 minutes, and turned it back on and it was still warm but no where near as hot as it was before.

Ever since this incident, the battery has been draining very fast. I fully charged it overnight, and within 15 minutes the phone had already drained 30% of the battery. Another issue I have noticed is that my data connection is showing as "4G" in places that I have always been able to get an "LTE" connection.

I have tried doing a hard reset twice, but it doesn't appear to have helped. I have shut the phone down several times normally. I updated to iOS 11.2.6 the day before this all started happening. I am thinking about wiping the phone and setting it up from scratch, but I don't know if that will help anything.

Hello jonshiota,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities and asking about your iPhone battery and heat. I am happy to offer some things to check.

First and most important will be to check out this help article about batteries: Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan Tips for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

The article includes lots of great information along with multiple tips to help you maximize your battery life. Once you have gone through all the tips, if you are still experiencing issues, this help article talks about the importance of using and storing your device within the recommended temperatures: Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures

If you are using your device in conditions outside of the normal recommended ambient temperatures, the device may behave differently as described in that article.

If your device gets too warm

If the interior temperature of the device exceeds the normal operating range, the device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. If this happens, you might notice these changes:

  • Charging, including wireless charging, slows or stops.
  • The display dims or goes black.
  • Cellular radios enter a low-power state. The signal might weaken during this time.
  • The camera flash is temporarily disabled.
  • Performance slows with graphics-intensive or augmented-reality apps or features.

Additionally, if you're navigating, the device might show this alert and turn off the display: "Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down." Navigation still provides audible turn-by-turn directions. When approaching a turn, the display will illuminate to guide you through the turn.

Next, I recommend checking your settings. Please check all your settings to ensure you are getting maximum life from your battery based on how you utilize your iPhone.

The last thing you can check is in Settings > Battery. This area shows everything that is using your battery, and breaks down by percentage (if you have that option enabled), the apps that are using your battery the most.

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
