FireWire/thunderbolt issue
I’m trying to find out whether i can run a thunderbolt device on a mini mac that only has a fw800 port. Anyone know? It’s a mid 2010 mac running sierra 10.12.6

No' however OWC still has some combo FireWire 800 drives and enclosures available that also have USB 3.0 or 3.1 connections. That way you could still use them with a newer Mac in the future. see > Search Results for Mercury Firewire 800 drives at MacSales.com

no, emulation of another protocol is tricky and emulation of a faster protocol on a slower one is impossible

Simple answer, no.
The long answer, buy a newer Mini that has Thunderbolt.
Had to be eliminated from the equation...
