iMac Running Painfully Slow

Hi all,

I hope our community can give me guidance. My machine has been running painfully slow for some time. I recognise that beach-balling appears to be the main culprit and from reading previous posts run EtreCheck on my computer.

These are the results:

EtreCheck version: 4.0.4 (4A150)

Report generated: 2018-03-01 16:29:51

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 64:31

Performance: Poor

Problem: Computer is too slow

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Poor performance - EtreCheck report took over 10 minutes to run. This is very unusual.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. It appears to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

And if i can add to den.thed's excellent résumé, Trusteer and associated elements should be removed soon as possible. No matter if it is there because your bank has said you must have it. Tell them it is not for use with Macs.

1. For starters you are running AV Ware on your Mac.

Completely uninstall all traces of Kaspersky as per the developers instructions.

(third party AV and Cleaners generally do more harm than good in macOS)

see > macOS - Security - Apple

2. You have a lot of third party junk and user items installed and set to launch at startup.

Then remove any other unnecessary user log-in items that are set to launch at startup.

(adobe cc, ms office, dropbox, skype, etc...)

see > macOS Sierra: Open items automatically when you log in

and/or > https://www.macworld.com/article/2047747/take-control-of-startup-and-login-items .html

3. You may also have a damaged or failing Hard Drive.

To check, restart in macOS Recovery and Repair your Macintosh HD using Disk Utility.

Thank you den.thed your quick generosity has helped me with a functioning computer. The only thing I left was Dropbox because I need it to continuously update my files, as I use it for work and with clients, etc. But everything else as easy enough to do and made a massive difference.

Again cannot say thank you enough.
