cassette tape

just wondering how to save a file to cassette tape on an apple IIe. tried save "name of program" cursor dissapeared computer beeped once and than beeped twice. got a syntax error message.
read about saving a file to tape from two seperate books one said to just type save and file name the other book said to put filename in quotation marks. I was using a ge tape recorder, tried to plug a cable into the mic jack and the rem jack. do i need a special tape recorder for my apple IIe?

Any standard cassette recorder will work. plug tape out into the mic jack and tape in to the ear jack. Apple II does not use the remote switch at all, the important thing is to find the correct volume setting to get reliable read/write.
Applesoft and integer BASIC both use SAVE and LOAD to access a cassette.

Forrest,

Thanx for the update. Do you have a website address for more detailed information on configuring recorders to be data drives? I know those days were pretty wild and loose for what equipment would work and what would not. Computer engineers were making things up as they went along.
