Checking AirPods battery

I'm glad I finally bought the AirPods, after going through so many wired ear[hones. And I like the ability to check the battery status by merely opening the battery case when in the vicinity of the iPhone.

But I can't figure out the exact things need in order to see the white notification pop-up on my iPhone. The phone must be on, obviously, but other than that, sometimes it appears and sometimes not. And yes, I'm holding the case close to the phone.

I've looked through Apple's documentation, too. Do I need to have Bluetooth active and connected? I'm not sure. Anyone know?

By the way, I'm not sure which community to post to; and searching the list has always been, shall we say, dicey?

(I'm fully updated on my phone as of today).

AirPods-OTHER, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3), MacBookPro 13,1 2016; iTunes 12.7

Yes, you need to have BT on to see the battery level.
