Copying movie clips between computers

Many of my movie clips are mounted on my MacBook Pro c2009 running I Movie09 v 8.0.6. I tried to copy some of these to my I-Mac c2011 running I-Movie 10.1.8 via a usb stick. I can fond the clips easily on Finder in a movies directory under a sub file Movie Events. There does not seem to be a comparable route on my I-Mac. So I copied the clips from my MacBook and tried to import them into I-Movie on the I-Mac.

I got a message saying that some files could not be transferred - these are stabilisation files and two others. I was able to go into the clip files on the usb stick were there are two versions of the clips - the raw clips and a stabilised clip. When I tried to import the stabilised clips into I-Movie on the I-Mac, there was an error message saying that the files could not be recognised. Can anyone provide me with a reliable method of transferring clips between computers please. Should add that the clips are all HD format.

I am not that familiar with iMovie version 8 but I think the file structure is the same as version 9. So i would suggest you go into your movies folder on Mac Book Pro where you found the iMovie Events folder. You should also see an iMovie projects folder. Copy these two folders to the Movies folder on your iMac via your usb stick which you may need to format as MacOS extended journaled. Most usb sticks are formatted Fat 32 which has a file size limit which might be a problem. If the files copy ok then you won't need to reformat. After you have the two folders in your iMac's Movie folder open iMovie 10.1.8 and in the file menu select update projects and events. iMovie will convert your projects and events to be compatible with 10.1.8. I know this works for iMovie version 9 so I hope it works for your iMovie version 8.

It's taking a bit if time Jim, as I have had to order a larger usb stick. One other thing occurs to me. I have all the movie events transferred from my camera. Do I still need to copy the directory complete, or can I select the events I want to process? Also do you know anything about the format of saved events that have been edited? I usually save the events that came from my old digital tape camera into I-Tunes and then copy them onto a DVD. Trouble is that Quick Play will not read them, but the DVD player in my home entertainment system will. I am now in the process of editing and transferring my ACVHD movies to a DVD and I have Toast Titanium 16, but I'm not sure how to save in this format from I-Movie. Any thoughts?

Yes you can select the events in the events folder that you want. Just create a new events folder( name it the same as the original) and copy the events into it that you want. Same for projects. iMovie will see both folders and you can choose which to update when you select update projects and events. If there is a problem change the name of the original iMovie Events folder so iMovie will only see your new folder with the events you have selected. Not sure I understand your second question. The video clips in the AVCHD format are .mts files. Try moving the AVCHD folder to your desktop and Contro-clicking on it and selecting Show Package Contents. Find the BDMV file and do the same. You will see a STREAMING folder. Open that and all of your MTS movies will be in there. The mts files should open in Quicktime player and you can save them as .mov or mp4.
