MacBook Pro screen died. Go to external Monitor.

My MBPro's screen died. I want to use an external monitor. How do I tell the computer to recognize the monitor when the screen is black . . . thus no cursor. Or am I in to a new screen?

I use an iMac with a bad display. I just plugged an external into the computer and it used it, though it is a bit finicky since it still thinks there's another display but if I switch it to mirroring then it uses the wrong ratio. I have to use a utility called DisableMonitor to avoid my mouse from accidentally positioning itself onto the dead display area.
