Is there a way to determine if a sent email has been received by the addressee?

I want to know if there is a feature in the Mail program that permits me to find out if an email I sent to a person have been received and opened by that person.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

There is no such feature built into Mail. You may find a third-party add-on that offers such a feature.
