Developer's MacBook Pro hangs about once per week

His MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) is running with the lid closed 100% of the time.

There are no software updates currently available via the App store.

Connected devices to each of the 4 USB-C ports:

left rear: Apple USB-C charge cable (2m)

left front: Apple USB-C to full size USB adapter connected to 12.9" iPad Pro

right rear: Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter connected to:

- HDMI to HDMI cable connected to Dell 27" LCD

- Apple USB male to USB female cable connected to:

- Apple USB Extended keyboard connected to:

- Jabra USB headset and

- Logitech USB dongle for Logitech M705 bluetooth mouse

right front: Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport adapter connected to:

- HDMI to DVI cable connected to identical Dell 27" LCD

He ran the Etrecheck report. I will post it or have him post it shortly. Your feedback/diagnosis will be greatly appreciated.

It is it possible that the USB dongle and headset connected to the USB keyboard might be drawing too much power?

Jonathan

Here are a couple more details from Jonathan.

When he leaves the office, he simply disconnects all 4 cables from his Touchbar MacBook Pro. He does not open the lid to shut it down or put it to sleep. When he gets home, he connects it to 1 external LCD.

His MacBook has frozen 10-12 times (only at work). Jonathan observed that it frequently freezes when he is debugging code but only when there is keyboard or mouse input. He then gets a frozen (not really) spinning beach ball.

Check out the fsck usage in that report. That's pretty high.

These cables that Jonathan pulls out, are they connected to mounted drives at the time?

I'd suggest, if so, that's behaviour he wants to avoid. fsck is probably running to check the disk integrity when it notices the dirty journal.

In the first instance, restart the mac. Then, ensure that local drives are all properly ejected before pulling the cables out both at work and at home.

Jonathan doesn't seem to have backed up his local drive to Time Machine for nearly a year, either.

Developer's MacBook Pro hangs about once per week
