Clamshell doesn't work with 2017 13" Mac Pro when used with DisplayLink Docking Station

I am first time Mac user with a new 2017 13" MBP. In looking for a dual-monitor docking station, I find what I think is a good model, with good ratings, etc. It works, but I have to have my laptop open, at all times, and all new windows default to the laptop display.

I've seen the links from Plugable that suggests this is known issue, as well as the link Apple provides for clamshell requirements. Why all the stringent requirements? Is there a technical reason for being so stringent?

Any solutions on the horizon, without the need to go find another docking solution?
