Upgrading A 2009 MacBook Pro to Sierra/High Sierra

So I have an old 2009 MacBook Pro that I’m maximizing out to 8 GB of RAM and a solid state, if I were to get High Sierra or Sierra on the drive would I be able to run it or would it not work?

For Sierra, your MacBook would have to be a mid-2010 or later ( MacOS Sierra - Technical Specifications )

Your 2009 MacBook Pro can be upgraded to El Capitan if you already have OSX 10.6.8 or later already installed.

Here's how to get El Capitan: Get OS X El Capitan
