Do USB hard drives slow down Mac Pro?

Hi,

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro and use it for photo/video editing. It works fine but I notices that sometimes it takes a lot to open up the "save as" window or to do some very basic functions. I have a few HDs connected via USB and wonder if that could be a drawback in the Mac's performance.

Thanks in advance,

Carlos

If you haven't disabled Spotlight indexing on them it could be slowing things down, particularly if they are using USB2 (I am not familiar with your computer specifications). I use MavericksOS and you can open System Preferences > Spotlight and add it to the privacy list so it stops indexing. Of course will then not search the drive if you use Spotlight but there are other tools which you can use such as EasyFind.
