Mail crashes immedietly after opening

  • The macOS "Mail" program appears to crash as, or immedietely after it downloads new e-mails from my gmail and yahoo e-mail accounts.
  • This problem started suddenly in January. Before that the program worked reliably.
  • Since mid-January I've been accessing my e-mails successfully using yahoo and gmail sites through Safari.
  • I also access my e-mails through the "Mail" app on my iPhone and iPad. No problems with either one.
  • Since this first occurred it crashes each time I open it. This is not an intermittent problem.
  • The "Mail" program crashes do not effect other programs running or the stability of macOS. My iMac continues to function properly during and after the "Mail" program crashes.
  • I am using a mid-2011 27" iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB 1333MHz DDR3
  • I'm currently on macOS High Sierra version 10.13.3. In January it was operating on the latest version available at that time. I do the updates as they come available.
  • I have and maintain time machine backups

Please read and follow If Mail unexpectedly quits when viewing certain messages - Apple Support.

The idea is to be able to open Mail without it crashing, and with no email message selected. If you can do that, then rebuild that Mailbox, or all Mailboxes, according to Rebuild mailboxes in Mail on Mac - Apple Support.

Needless to say, if you are using any non-Apple "anti-virus", "cleaning", or "Internet security" junk, anything at all in that broad category of useless garbage, don't. A lot of things won't work if you do.
