My MacBook Pro is stuck at the login screen. Please help!

My Macbook was sleeping and started making strange noises as if updating software. Usually when it updates, I have to enter my password so I thought it odd. I woke it from sleep and it did seem to be going through the various stages it does when updating software. It then rebooted as normal. I switched it off and have been unable to boot it ever since. It starts and the Apple logo screen shows, and I am prompted to enter my password. It accepts my password and starts to boot. The black bar fills up, fast at first and then slowly. Eventually the black bar fills, and it remains stuck on that log in screen for literally hours. No screensave, nothing. Just that screen. I’ve tried starting in safe mode but it’s just the same. Please can anyone help me? I’m not techie at all I’m afraid.
