Possible to change which clip becomes active under playhead?

Today, when having multiple layers in the timeline, the uppermost clip/object is activated (with a circle on the playhead) where the playhead is located. Is there a way to change this behavior, e.g. setting it so that the clip in the primary storyline is activated in stead of the uppermost?

I want the "circle" on the playhead (which indicates the active object/clip) to always activate the lowermost video clip / the clip in the storyline...

Q: Is it possible to change which clip becomes active when hovering the playhead?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), nVidia 775m, 3.4GHz i5, 16GB RAM

Thanks for the input! But isn't this the same as just left-clicking the mouse when the mouse arrow is already hovering the clip? Typically I preview the project by hitting "space bar", and when I see something wrong in the preview window, I stop playing by hitting space bar again. Now the uppermost clip is activated. By this time I typically want the clip in the primary storyline to be activated.

Q1: Is there a way to change which clip becomes activated when pausing the project / changing the position of the playhead?

Q2: I am probably missing something, but why is "hovering the mouse --> clicking "c"" easier/quicker than just left-clicking the mouse?

Ah, I just realized! I dont have to put the pointer anywhere, I can just pause the preview --> click "c", and the videoclip in the primary storyline is selected =) This also happens when there is a video clip in the secondary storyline (e.g. b-roll), the clip in the primary storyline is selected when hitting C wherever the playhead is located.
