Do I need an installation disk since I'm running snow leopard 10.6.8?

Gray screen with instructions to reboot appears on booting installer I am trying to install snow leopard on a Mac Pro (2008). I erased the hard drive, inserted the snow leopard install disc and doubled clicked on the install icon. The computer restarts using the install disc but then a gray screen appears with instructions to manually shut down with the front button then restart. After I do this the same thing happens and never begins the install process. I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks very much.
